World news, also known as international news or global coverage, is the name for the broad field of journalism that deals with news from abroad or of a global subject matter. In the media industry, this includes news sent by foreign correspondents or – more recently – via distance communication technologies such as the Internet. World news is often distinguished from domestic or national news, but the distinction is sometimes blurred, particularly for journalists who cover war or other events that affect more than one nation or country.
The program is anchored by ABC News anchors and reporter Rhiannon Ally and Andrew Dymburt, who co-anchor Good Morning America First Look and the network’s weekday late local newscasts. The show features the latest global news in an engaging and atypical format.
Each day’s top stories are highlighted by video and photos paired with short descriptions, and occasionally short quotes from experts in the field. The show’s format is often credited for helping to shape the style of other national news programs.
A recurring segment, “Morning Papers,” featured off-beat articles and funny pictures from newspapers around the world; this was replaced in 2012 by The Mix, a similar but more modern version of this format using online stories. Occasionally, the show would feature an excerpt from one of the network’s newsmagazine programs – notably Nightline or This Week (Mondays only) – that was relevant to the current story being covered.
When a full-time anchor of the program leaves, a ceremony is typically held on their last broadcast; in the past, this was done with cardboard cutouts placed in the studio rafters as a nod to the program’s roots.
